Empowering Young
People

A critical part of our ethos at Gen-R Law is to empower young people to be part of the work against climate change. There are numerous ways in which we do this.

Initially, we will offer a platform for law students who have an interest in the environment to publish articles on relevant topics, which we will share through our own presence on LinkedIn and on our website. We will also offer internships to law students and work-experience students and help good candidates secure opportunities with other firms through our own network of connections.

Once Gen-R Law is more established, we will begin offering a small selection of scholarships to aspiring lawyers with a demonstrated interest in environmental issues.

In due course we will begin to host training days for law students and others, showing them how every area of the law can be used to support the work against climate change. We will also keep a small library of relevant books on climate change, climate science, environmental law, indigenous philosophies towards the environment and the natural world and related topics, which we will make available for students to borrow.

We will also implement a sabbatical program for our associates, whereby they can agree to sacrifice 1% of their salary into a sabbatical fund, which we will match. After five years the fund will pay out and the associate will be given a four-month sabbatical, during which time they will not be permitted to do any work. This will help ensure our associates do not get burnt out, and that they have the time to travel, find their own inspiration and enjoy the natural world that they will be helping, through their work, to preserve.

Gen-R’s Gen-C

General Counsel are some of the most influential individuals in modern companies, and the ability of the General Counsel to drive positive change and focus on specific topics and challenges is stronger than ever. In time, Gen-R Law will therefore introduce a formal training program for our associates, designed to equip them with the skills to be the in-house and General Counsel ‘For Tomorrow’ (the programme will be named “Gen-R’s Gen-C”). This will help ensure that future generations of General Counsel are not just experts in the law, but that they can also speak knowledgably about the range of issues which fall under the broad banner of climate change. We will also hope to make these training sessions available to associates at other firms, in the spirit of our value of collaboration – we succeed, or fail, as a team.
