Meet the team

Joshua is the Founder and Managing Partner of Gen-R Law. He leads the firm’s ESG, Compliance and Investigations practice.

Before setting up Gen-R Law, Joshua spent seven years working as a qualified solicitor at three of the world’s leading international law firms. As a specialist Corporate Crime and Investigations lawyer, he advised clients, ranging from FTSE 100 companies to high profile individuals, on a wide range of domestic and international issues involving bribery, corruption, money laundering, fraud, tax evasion, governance and associated regulatory and compliance matters.

Joshua has significant experience of managing internal investigations, along with regulatory enquiries and proceedings by the Serious Fraud Office, HM Revenue & Customs and the Gambling Commission.

As part of his training, Joshua spent six months working in Dubai. He was also involved in the criminal defence of Andy Coulson during the Phone Hacking Trial at the Old Bailey.

Joshua was recognised in the Legal 500 2020 as having “an inexhaustible supply of energy and an understanding of the case strategy far in excess of most at his level”. Joshua was also part of a team that received the ‘Excellence in Access to Justice’ award at the Law Society Excellence Awards 2019, for his work with the ‘Youth Justice Legal Centre’ and ‘Just for Kids Law’ charities. Prior to setting up Gen-R Law, Joshua took a year out to travel with his wife. He used that time to educate himself by reading extensively around all aspects of climate change, ESG, biodiversity, sustainability and the supporting domestic and international legal and regulatory frameworks.

Representative Experience

• Acting as counsel to a major investment fund in relation to an SFO raid and investigation concerning a wholly owned subsidiary involved in the fuel distribution and biofuel industries.
• Significant experience of (i) preparing anti-bribery & corruption risk assessments for companies in a range of sectors; (ii) preparing and supporting with the implementation of tailored policies and procedures to mitigate potential risks; and (iii) delivering related training to Boards and senior management.
• Advising a FTSE 100 gaming company in relation to an investigation by HMRC concerning allegations of money laundering, bribery and corruption in Turkey by a legacy group business.
• Acting for a leading international media company on a complex, cross-border investigation, concerning multiple serious allegations including potential corruption of public bidding procedures in Brazil, possible anti-trust issues, substantial internal frauds and conflicts of interests and multiple potential internal controls issues.
• Advising several high-profile individual clients in relation to SFO investigations concerning suspicions of bribery in the oil & gas industry in various jurisdictions throughout the Middle East.
• Seconded to a global cosmetics retailer that was subject to a Department of Justice monitor, with involvement in the Compliance and Global Investigations teams. Had direct conduct of numerous internal investigations in multiple jurisdictions concerning potential breaches of company policy, conflicts of interests and other related matters.
• Conducted an internal investigation for a multinational insurance provider into concerns relating to the tax affairs of a senior executive covering multiple jurisdictions including the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the United States.
• Extensive experience advising numerous leading gaming companies on governance, anti-corruption and regulatory compliance matters, including requirements flowing from the Licence Conditions and Code of Practice rules enforced by the Gambling Commission.
